O.W.L.s = Ordinary Wizarding Levels. Fifth years take the O.W.L.s. A student's sixth year courses are determined by what they get on their O.W.L.s and what the proffessor teaching the course requries as a minimum O.W.L. score for their course.

N.E.W.T.s = Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests. The N.E.W.T.s are only taken by seventh years.
