Learning to love with your whole heart or protecting yourself?

I do not believe that anyone could live their lives to the fullest if they do not love wholeheartedly. But to do that, one must be able to fully love him/herself first before attempting to open the heart for others. This in itself is a way of spreading that safety net to catch oneself in the instance when one falls out of love.
The heart is a resilient thing. It WILL mend if you will it to. But not to know love in its entirety could be the same as not having lived at all.
Trust me. I have been there before. Don't protect yourself against love; just have some insurance, that's all...

Learning to learn with your whole heart. If it gets broken the pain will go away eventually however it might take some time and you would have never experienced that total "heart" relationship that everyone should from time to time.

The two choices are as Ying is to Yang. So the answer is it depends.
Someone who has had a difficult past now instead needs to learn to love wholeheartedly.
Learning to love would be more important.
Someone who loves others, perhaps too easily, will instead need to learn how to protect. Protecting himself or herself would be more important.
A third option--and my choice--would be perfect balance between Ying and Yang. Both.
