A lot of people have told me that it hurts your chances of getting into a college that is out of state if you're from a different state. I guess it would make sense that they would accept in-state students first, but I have also had a lot of people tell me that it actually helps your chances for getting into an out of state school if you're from another state. They tell me that universities and colleges like to have diversity (people from other countries and states) because it makes them look good and that they love to get out-of-state tuition from students. Does anyone have any input on this? I'm very curious considering I'm going to start applying to college soon.

The second group of people are more correct. If you are applying to a public college or university, they like out-of-state students because they can collect out-of-state tuition, which is usually higher than in-state tuition, from you. If you are applying to a private school, the diversity issue holds. Not only does it provide more diversity, but it makes the school look more regional or national, rather than local, so it gives them prestige if more of their students are from out of state.

Your transcripts, test scores, extracurriculars are the keys. Not your residence. My son chose in-state for his bachelor's program and out-of-state for law school. His grades and LSAT were what they considered, not his address.
The difference to the student is the difference in cost.

Hi!!! Well, since you appear to have an open mind.... don't be afraid to look north for acceptance, academic excellence, and a very affordable 'international' education. See link below.... Good luck! ;-)
