Not in the near future. The schism is too deep, goes back hundred of years. The terrorist groups in Iraq are making this use of this to divide the people of Iraq.

The US has to stay if only the make sure the Iraqi Army and Police can handle the job before leaving. Asking the Arab states and Iran to send in peacekeepers is like throwing fuel into the fire.

The simple and sad truth is that we can't. It will take the Iraqis time to sort things out amongst themselves, much like a sibling fight. They are willing to die for what they believe, and that it is hard for westerners to wrap their heads around. This kind of thing is going on all over the globe, in Darfur, etc.
I know that it wasn't part of your Q, but I think that the best thing that we as westerners can do is to try and teach people how to compromise and "live and let live".

That is going to take at least a generation or two. The fact is that the Iraqi people have never experienced democracy, and for the last few decades have been at the mercy of a terrorist dictator. It will take time for people to get used to another way of life.

its tradition, they have been doing it tribally for 1000 yrs, what makes anyone think that thay can stop the bloodshed and make them all love each other is beyond me.
let them divide the country up and the diffrent factions can all have their own territory the problem there is the oil which a compromise of sorts will have to be reached to divide the proceed up equally, otherwise forget it the bloodshed will never stop

We all talk about democracy and peace, that only westerners have to offer, but you have to look at the bigger picture.

All these dictators have been puppets of the western world, they have been used by the countries that now want to offer democracy. These dictators were the friends of the western world, as, and when needed, when the usefulness ceases they become enemies.

They were taught to bring hatred within the sects at the convenience of the western community, and that now is inbred within the population.

Look at America and how they are now married to Musharraf, they are using him and asking him to fight his own community, but again it must be remembered he was not democratically elected.

However he is needed for the time being and is being cajoled with promises of arms and finance.

Democracy is a word used only at the terms of the western world, and only when it suits them.

When hatred runs deep, it's not possible to ever achieve peace.

There will be times of relative calm, but the sore spot will linger as long as there is a country divided.

The only way to have harmony in a nation is when all come to the table.

So far, not all groups are welcome at that table in Iraq.

This is much older than the USA. This fighting was old when Columbus sailed from Spain.

It is not just Iraqis in this fight and it is not just in the Mideast.

The US has to get out. That's the prerequisite. After that, Arab and Iranian peacekeeping forces need to help restore order in the Sunni and Shiite areas of the country, respectively.
