Because this is an unjust war. And the administration knows it.

Are you kidding?? During that time (WWI, WWII), we had men..real men, that would serve their country. Now we have a bunch of whiney babies that call themselves men, get for real!! Guys can't even work a true 40 hour week without complaining, those of fighting age are narcissistic and stand for nothing..........yeah, this bunch of guys being told what to do by their government, like fight in a war for their country? I don't think so. That was then, unfortunately reality is now. I totally agree with Dionannan's statement above, and also whcwarrior comment below, totally agree.

PS..Kevin D...conscription was in effect during the Civil War..however the Act of 1917 gives the president the power to draft and can invoke this power during times of national emergency, that is why all males must register on their 18th birthday. Vietnam was considered a "lottery" draft.

There's not a dramatic need for troops and there is so much opposition to American diplomacy in the middle-east by Americans that there would be mass draft-dodging, and I highly doubt the senate would be able to pass anything remotely close to a draft. If the country was united behind a cause and the need was more severe it would be more reasonable, but because Iraq is not an immediate threat to U.S. mainland there's not the feeling of needing to serve

I am against a draft at this point in our National history because the insubordination and drug use among some draftees in the Vietnam war and I believe that we would have the same problems now. Also nothing is stronger than the heart of a volunteer. In the event of dire need I believe a draft should be considered i.e. massive terrorist attacks.

People ran to enlist in those wars, because they felt the war effort was righteous. The draft in Vietnam was horrible and easily evaded by the wealthy. The controversy shook this nation. People enlisted following 9-11, but this war is unrelated and brought about through manipulation of false intelligence on the part of the administration.
Draft is unnecessary when a war is just and unjustified when the cause is unrighteous.

The military draft is a violation of the thirteenth amendment to the US constitution. The US government cannot compel you into servitude as a soldier or anything else except as punishment for a crime. Besides do you want to be drafted? If you think the "War on Terror" is so great, why don't you volunteer?

because the American public--with the right to vote--Just wont go for it--whose gonna take the office--Republicans, Democrats? Maybe Green or Liberal None of the above are tough enough to take a HONEST stand. No draft, cant see it happening, be a seriously dumb move politically speaking.

A draft only works if the population as a whole supports the endeavor -- that's not the case currently.

So much of the US population is opposed to continued US presence in Iraq that attempting to force a draft would cause people who have (so far) just grumbled quietly to actively rise up -- if only in self preservation.

Massive opposition and sentiments that the war is unjust. It is easy to fight for your country when it is attacked, but much harder when you are the aggressor. The draft should only be used in absolute emergencies not so that the president can pursue further wars just because his only foreign policy is to go to war against our enemies. How much harm can negotiations in good faith instead of war do?

Yes,why not?It shall work but only when people want it,may be ,through their government.Draft is resorted to when the existing armed forces are considered to be unequal to the task ahead like, to meet the threat perception of a country.
