I am planning on buying a Porsche 968 within the next few months. I'm looking to modify it with a turbo kit. I'm sure it'll be much cheaper than finding one of the 15 they only built as a turbo stock. Can anyone help me out here?

I'd rather go with a 968 without a turbo than a 944. I've fallen in love with the 968.

The real question here, is just what are your goals in regards to the car? Because the 968 Turbo is such a rare car, there is a good chance that upgrading a base 968 might be less expensive... but that is still MIGHT! Keep in mind that the factory 968 turbo is not a regular 968 with a turbo added to the engine. Like the other turbo models, they start with a different engine, to which the turbo is added. Brakes and suspension are then also upgraded to balance out the platform. And sometimes other trim and body work items are added as well. To genuinely replicate the factory's work on a base 968 would be a very expensive undertaking, requiring a complete engine rebuild with many new parts in addition to the added turbo and related parts (figure $10-15k right here). Rounding out the other upgrades will be another $5-8k. Then the wider wheels and other unepxected items that will certainly turn up... in the end, budget $18-25k on top of the purchase of the 968! And then keep in mind that if you go to resell the car, you will likely have decreased it's base value with everything you've done.

So, what is you goal? As has been mentioned, on the performance front, a factory 951 or 951S would cost less, and deliver some outstanding performance possibilities. If you prefer the looks of the later 968, it would be much easier to fit the 968 lights and bumpers to a 951 than upgrade the 968 to a turbo engine.

Or are you seeking a slightly (very slightly) more modern car? In which case, you may want to consider that the 968 offers more performance than a typical driver can make use of as is. You may want to get the 968 and actually learn to drive it to it's capabilities before deciding you need more capability from the car - the fact is, in almost all cases, it's the driver and not the car that is limiting it's performance. As an added bonus, when you have some experience with such driving, you will be in a much better position to evaluate the car's need and how to enhance them.

Of course, you can also simply bolt an after market turbo to a 968 and consider it done! But as is often the case with Porsches and other expensive automobiles, the cheap route is often the most expensive route you can take. You will either spend a good chunk of money on the turbo and run it at almost no boost, achieving performance levels that would have been easier and more cost effectively obtained with ECU reprogramming and a more open exhaust, or you will turn up the boost, trading a little hp for engine reliability and hastening the need for a complete (and expensive) rebuild. Further, you will be without the suspension and braking that should accompany the added hp, taking away the biggest strengths of the 968.

Decide just what your goal is, and the possible solultions will likely be clearer.

If you want a turbo porsche, Buy a 944 turbo. A 968+turbo kit will be a maitenance nightmare. 968s are hard enough to find parts for as is.

The turbo kit would have to prob be a custom job, which would run you most likely more than the cost of the car.

You can check with your local porsche club of america region though. They would know best. www.pca.org

I know you may be in love with the 968, but also look into old 911s. Theyre very reliable, and so damned much fun to drive.

968s are just too low on power for my taste I guess :/

If you can find an n/a 968, but it and then worry about the turbo later. Your best bet is to find a forum of enthusiasts online, they'll be able to help you the most.

First, check the forums for any info. I also hear that there are Porsche only shops that will probably be able to help.
