If it is diagnosed as tonsillits it is not serious. If it is recurring or chronic, then it is a problem.

Tonsilitis is usally self limiting, however if there are white spots present on the tonsils, strep throat and mono need to be ruled out. And if one tonsil is way bigger than the other and quite painful, it could be a peritonsilar abcess which is an emergency.

It is serious it can turn into a serious infectation and septisemia (I don't know if I spelt that correct) but effectively blood poisning etc and you could die if not treated in time and properly.
