It was a woman who said it, 47 years old, unemployed, divorced, living off her child support, one child, both she and the child are pictures of health. The child support is 2000 US a month.

We pay into social security all our lives and when we reach age 62 we are supposed to get a monthly payment for retirement. Also you can draw social security from a parents account if your under 18 and they have died, for certain disabilities and from a dead spouses account in some cases. It is not the "dole" that is something completely different, the dole is commonly called welfare or aid to dependant children. that is where the governement just gives you money, usually based on the number of children you have and you sit around getting fat off taxpayer money even if you have never paid any taxes.

Social security is primarily an old age pension program run by the federal government. Some disabled people also get socail security payments as well. You and your employer both pay into it for the entire time you work. It's different from unemployment and welfare.

Try retired. We pay into it all the years we work. After we're 62 we can start drawing a monthly payment.

It means they have income from Social Security. They get that by being retired or disabled.
