Okay I have a dillema. I am a third year college student, but only in my Sophomore year. I hate the major I am and I only picked it because it is what my sister chose and it looked easy. It is easy, but I have not one bit of passion for it. It is psychology. I have no desire to be a psychologist or a teacher, which are the only two things I can do with this degree.
My problem is, I want to quit. I have know ALL along that I am not meant for college. I would rather just get my liscense to be a hair stylist. It is what I have always wanted to do, and I planned to do until Hurrican Katrina came and ruined my plans to go to school for it in New Orleans. I have know from my first semester that it wasn't for me but I tried to keep going to please my family and the expectations around me. I know what I want to do, I don't know if it is the right choice... to do what makes me happy or to just go with what is "right"/what will make me the most financially secure in life. HELP!

why waste not only the time, but also the money going to school for something you don't like? if you are in your second year, then you prob have most of your base classes done. take time off and find out what you really want to do. it's not hard to go back to school. this way, you can save the money and you know when you do spend it on school, you won't waste it. you may also find that what you really enjoy doing, you don't have to have a degree for. that's what happened to me.

It sounds to me like you need some good advising. It isn't the case that the only things you can do with a degree in psychology are to be a psychologist or a teacher, to begin with. I'm not saying that you need to do that, but your misinformation on that makes me wonder about how much information you have about the possibilities overall.

If you love hairdressing, can you take a few classes in it on the side to make sure it is what you think it is before dropping everything else? You could do this at a community college. Someone else's comment about switching to a business degree so that you could open your own salon profitably in the long run makes sense to me.

My hairdresser has a quality college degree. I'm not saying that it is necessary to cut hair, but I've got to tell you that I really appreciate being able to talk about something other than hair with him.

Pursuing a career in something for which you already know you are devoid of passion is THE wrong choice, no matter what... EVEN if you change your mind much later about it all. You can always find a way to go back and get more education.

If you don't like something, you probably won't be very good at it, which means you probably won't make too much money doing it. Plus, good psychology careers require a graduate education. Could you imagine doing this, not for 4 years, but for another 5 or more after that, and only THEN starting to make money?

It's no question... you have to do what inspires you. But first, you should make absolutely sure that *only* hairdressing inspires you. Just because you wanted to be a stylist before going to college, that doesn't mean it's your destiny. You picked it because you knew what the job entailed at the time. There could be a job that is equally motivating and better paying, but you just haven't discovered it. If that's true, tt could be the case that the solution isn't dropping out of college, but rather changing your major.

In other words, really take some time exploring other options before dropping out. Because once you drop out, it's not easy to get back in. Imagine discovering that being a stylist isn't as appealing as you thought it would be. What would you do then?
