You need to find an SSI attorney, Most will work on a commission basis, in that they will get a portion of your award. The first time you apply your application sets the date for which you will get benefits, retroactively, if you are eventually approved for benefits.

Example: You apply in January of 2007, you may have to appeal 3 times but if your approved in June of 2008 you get paid for every month you have had to wait (all the way back to Jan. 07') You get this in lump sum and you have a limit on the number of months you have to spend ALL of it.

The attorney will take your case based on how likely you are to get the benefits and of course the longer it takes the more you get and the higher his fee.

I know many people that had to appeal 3 or more times. They want you to give up and go away.

Go to the SSI website. It has all the info you need. I have read it but cannot quote it to you. I do know that it is covered though.
