That's an area where higher education can help. Even If you study, research on your own and try to publish, most books that sell seem to have a Dr. as an author. I suppose you could publish in someone else's name with them. Another very helpful thing is people skills which you get with the study of emotional intelligence as it applies to your situation and intuition for that and research. College helps you in networking for knowledge and entrance into positions about which you won't find out about otherwise. Frankly it will take genius in that group and as much on the social side and the professional. Things are moving so fast it's hard to keep up. I find the leaders aren't that hip, but if your not one of them it's nearly impossible to break in. Maybe that will change. Like in everything it's more who you know all too often as long as you have the title. Without being able to use intuition, I don't see how anyone would make it. A one dimensional person is handicapped and sometimes it take two people or a network.
