When all else fails-why not try he truth. And as cold or as mean as it may seem it's actually the best way to avoid getting throttled into this situation in the future.
You no longer have to come up
with lies and they no longer have
to expect you to show.
Keep it simple; there's no need to be nasty about it. Just tells them that your social relationship outside of the realms of your employment does not work for you.
That you prefer to keep things professional for the time being.

Your neighbors are out on vacation, and an elderly friend was dog sitting for them. One of their dogs died, and they've asked me to bury it for them. The woman who is watching the dog has arthritis, and she can't do it.
That was something that actually happened to me once, and I've since retold that story a couple times as an excuse.
If that excuse won't work, just think of some legitimate reasons you've been late for something before, or have had to cancel.

I think I would just say you have a lot going on in your life and you would like to be alone for a while and not talk to people, or something to that effect.

How about a friend just got fired and is really deprssed. to cheer him up you told him you would hang out with him that night.
or
my toilet valve just broke off and it is shooting water all over the house. i called a plumber and we got the water off but now i have this huge mess that will mildew if i dont clean it soon

Tell him he's ugly and you hate his guts and don't ever call again, it sounds harsh but you won't need anymore excuses with that guy.
