The Ahnk Is an Ancient Egyptian Symbol that represents many things. The Catholic Church adopted the symbol as a Cross. The center is representing the nile river. The lopp on the top represents the Delta.
The Ankh resembles a key it is considered the key to eternal life.
Ankh
by Cecille Soberano
Found widely in Egyptian art, the ankh has come to symbolize life after death. Originally an Egyptian hieroglyphic representing the womb with its looped top, its meaning is related to matters concerning life and death, or rather, Eternal Life ("Nem Ankh"). In art, especially that depicting funeral ceremonies, their gods and goddesses are shown clutching the ankh by its loop as if it were a key. In this manner, it is believed that the ankh would open the gates of death on to immortality.
It is also known as the Key of the Nile, representing the union of Isis and Osiris. It is said that this mystic union would initiate the annual flooding of the Nile, providing Egypt with her various means to survive. The meaning of the ankh as womb, thus fertility and reproduction, is well-illustrated in this particular legend.

Did you mean ANKH?
It has many meanings including those who follow the Goddess, Lesbians sometimes use it as their symbol. The ancient Egyptians used it as a symbol for eternal life. I even know of a few Neo-Christians who are currently using this as their symbol.
Look at all the derogatory meaning out there related to the pentacle. I have worn a pentacle ring for more than 50 years & I had some kid tell me a few years back that it was a gang symbol, whatever.
So, wear the Ankh, wear it proudly. If it means something to you, to heck with the rest of the world. I used to wear purple all the time & folks asked me if I was in mourning. They question what they don't understand.
Its kind of like the Biker's slogan, "If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand, anyway!"

Oh I was waiting such a question. You touched my favorite theme ancient Egyptians. Yes though the original meaning is eternal life people use to relate it with the goth cross. Are you interested of ancient Egyptians? Look when someone talks to you about the ahnk you can just tell them with what meaning you wore it.

The ahnk is the universal symbol for all Egyptian gods and Goddess, It has many meanings.
It represents the Nile, its the key to the underworld (When the sun sets it sits over the Nile and then the path to the afterlife is shown, and it is belived this is where the symbol came from.), Fertility, and eternal life.
If your comfortable wearing the symbol, then wear it. Those who think it is a gothic crass have it all wrong, they look nothing alike.

*lol* The Ahnk has been worn by goths for a couple of decades now, nothing new there. Since the goth subculture involves death and vampirism, it makes sense to wear something that symbolizes eternal life.

These people are uninformed. Tell them to go look up the symbol in a history book so they don't embarrass themselves in front of any other educated people. What is a "Goth Cross"? anyway? Isn't that when you invert the Christian cross? Such uninformed people. Besides, any teacher can set the record straight with these ignorant people.

No. It's not a mistake to wear what you like. If you like your Ankh (that's how it's spelled) and you like black, wear them. Who cares what others think of the way you dress, as long as your happy, if anyone doesn't like it, screw 'em.
