My 8 year old subaru 96000 miles needs a quart of oil every 1000-1500 miles. No gray or white smoke. No oil on the ground. No problems with antifreeze levels. highway driving makes the problem worse. What is wrong and what can I do for it? Will a thicker oil help? I use high mileage 10-30 oil already.

My mom's car does the same. According to her she put in some 15-45 this summer and less oil was lost. Apparently the seals start to leak and at higher speeds there is more blowby and more oil loss.

With reference to another answer, I'm afraid that a thinner oil, or a synthetic, will be consumed even more quickly than what you're using right now. Continue to use what the engine manufacturer recommends, and buy it by the case at Wal-mart: their store-brand oil ("Super-Tech?") is quite good and less expensive than the others.
Eventually, you'll want a shop to do a compression test. You may just have worn valve seals, which shouldn't be all that costly to replace. Otherwise, look into having a rebuilt engine installed. Three thousand bucks for a like-new engine is a great deal less money than $15k for a new car.

Hey Gal, next time use 10w40. If you live in the southern climates where in the winter , tempature is never below 10 deg. ya use the 10w40 in the winter and if tempurature reaches into the high 90's in the summer go with 20w50. Also use a good brand name oil like Pennzoil,Castrol, Mobil ( skip Quaker State cause a lot of my pals have had engine problems with this oil cause of the parafine content)

its just old and its probably burnin it off whether u notice it or not...if u dont have any leaks it may help to use a thinner or a synthetic oil, cause the thicker oil is harder to pump through on a high mileage vehichle & maybe check the pvc valve, it lets the motor breathe easy

THE RINGS ARE BAD ON THE PISTONS, THE OIL IS BEING BURNT UP IN THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER, CATYLETIC CONVERTOR IS PROBABLY FULL OF OIL, CHECK THE TIP OF THE EXHAUST AND SEE IF IT IS FULL OF OIL TOO, try a straight 40 weight oil like valvoline
