Well, i am also 28 and an Aussie who basically reads for a living (english teacher!) so i'll give you a list of some books i think might be appealing to you and that i like.
1. The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak (great aussie author!)
2. The following books by Bryce Courtenay, another great aussie author - these 3 are a series of books, sometimes found together as the australian trilogy. They are The Potato Factory (you may have seen the tele movie a few years back with lisa mccune? This is better) Tommo and Hawk and Solomon's Song. These are great. Also The Power of One (also a great movie) and Jessica are great reads by him.
3. Three Wishes and The Last Anniversary are once again by an aussie called lianne moriarty.
4. Tara Road by maeve Binchy
5. Monica McInernay ( unsure of how to spell her surname!) is a good author. She's got a few good titles, i particulary like Family Baggage.
6. The Pact and My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult (among others. Her books are pretty good.)
7. The Lovely Bones (although the author's name has escaped me)
8. This one is one i think you will find enjoyable as i have seen you on some aussie posts - Not Happy John by Margo Kingston.
9. The Truth of The Matter by my hero Gough Whitlam ( i am happy to say i have a signed copy of this!)
10. Just remembered a good one i just read - the kite runner by Khaled Hosseini.
These are just some ideas. I hope you enjoy!!

Here on Earth by Alice Hoffman.
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld.
Pretties by Scott Westerfeld.
Specials by Scott Westerfeld (it's a trilogy).
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer.
New Moon by Stephenie Meyer (it's a series).
Good Girls by Laura Ruby.
I just read Good Girls and it was very good. A real page turner. Here is the summary:
Some people would say this is the story of a photograph. How it was taken, and what happened to me after the whole world saw it.
And it is.
But it's also the story of a lot of other things. A boy so beautiful he's like a punch to the throat. Best friends—the outrageous old ones and the out-of-the-blue new. It's about fishnets and eyebrow rings and a chick named Hamlet. Kick lines at lumberyards and conga lines at the prom. Crying in cars and gazing at stars. Mistakes, misunderstandings, and misconceptions. Good girls, bad boys, and everyone in between.
This is a story about love.
So look at the picture all you want.
I am so much more than what you see.

Try Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child.
http://www.prestonchild.com/
Here is a plot summary of one of my favorite books by them:
Called The Cabinet of Curiosities.
"In the 19th century, New Yorkers flocked to collections of strange and grotesque oddities called "cabinets of curiosities." Now, in lower Manhattan, a modern apartment tower is slated to rise on the site of one of the old cabinets. Yet when the excavators break into a basement, they uncover a charnel pit of horror: the remains of thirty-six people murdered and gruesomely dismembered over 130 years ago by an unknown serial killer.
In the aftermath, FBI Special Agent Pendergast and museum archaeologist Nora Kelly embark on an investigation that unearths the faint whisper of a mysterious doctor who once roamed the city, carrying out medical experiments on living human beings. But just as Nora and Pendergast begin to unravel the clues to the century-old killings, a fresh spree of murder and surgical mutilation erupts around them. . . and New York City is awash in terror."
Agent Pendergast is one of my favorite characters in modern day lit.
(by the way, I'm also 28)
Sometimes a girl just needs a good action / adventure brain candy kind of novel. lol

Well, it depends. If you like fantasy, there are several.
Lord of the Rings - Tolkien
Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn - Williams
A Wrinkle in Time - L'Engle
Ender's Game - Card
These are all suitable for all ages. If you are more mature, and are willing to handle violence, swear words, and graphic nudity, then the absolute best fantasy series is
A Song of Ice and Fire - Martin
And I know that I'll get a lot of flak, but stay away from the Harry Potter series unless you really like light children's books.
