We are leaving on Thursday night and coming back Sunday night. By doing this, should we avoid the worst of the traffic? Also, we are driving with our seven month old daughter- is this a dangerous drive, or should it be no more dangerous than any other interstate?

The times you have selected are good for avoiding traffic - and traffic cops. It's not more dangerous than any stretch of road, though as usual you'll want to be more careful when you pass the state line.

It will be hot, so you'll want to carry plenty of water and formula ... all that. Good air conditioning helps a lot! Depending on what part of L.A. you are coming from, you'll find good stops in Victorville, Barstow, Baker, and Primm if you need to get some coffee or change a diaper.

Make sure your hotel knows to expect a late check-in; due to the policy of overbooking some hotels will overbook. Now, if this happens, you must demand a solution from the front desk clerk. Unless they have rooms in a sister hotel available, they probably will want you to walk away. Don't do it! Demand to see the assistant hotel manager (there is one on duty for nights) and inform them you expect them to obtain a room for you. They will do it if you push, and they will comp you if you demand it (be nice about it; just explain you're going to have to waste a bunch of time going to another hotel with your young daughter late at night).

YOu have picked the best times to make this trip.
Night is great and you should be safe and traffic free.

NO danger and more cops this weekend than most.

Stop in Baker and Bakersfield for a snack let the little baby stretch. Also Victorville is also good for a brief stop

It's dangerous no matter when you go. It's best to leave around 5am during the crack of dawn to beat the traffic, especially with the baby in the car. Off days like thursday is good becasue most people go on weekends making it the most busy. Good luck on your drive and with the baby!

I live in LA (used to live in Barstow if you can believe that). You are doing the right thing leaving Thurs. However, Sunday is going to be a miserable and I mean miserable experience. If leaving Sunday is necessary, leave early in the AM as you can.

When driving through any desert area, take some jugs of water in your car.
