A military regimen is very motivational. But, this only works so well because it exists in a closed system. There is no escape, so the military can utilize the most efficient motivational techniques known to mankind.
If those who must be motivated psychologically perceive themselves in a similar situation, then you can benefit from these methods.
Otherwise, you must discover what they want...and promise to supply it in exchange for performance.

Thats actually an easy question. There is only one right answer. The source can be cash, sex, God, love, beer, you name it. The answer though is happiness. The only way you can ever motivate someone is to make them happy. Happy people will be motivated to help those who make them happy. You can of course do the absolute opposite and be like Hitler. He certainly was a great motivater. I prefer the former though.
