When in an "uncomfortable silence" situation,How do you handle that, with a joke, walk away, what?

For some mysterious reason, we do not handle silence very well. Instead of walking away, or making a joke etc. I retreat into myself and take what I call a mini trip. I go in my minds eye to my favorite city in the whole world, Venice and can sit for hours if I have to reliving my childhood when I lived with my Grandmother each year for my Summer vacation.

I dont handle it too well...lol.
The akwardness of the situation gets me wondering what the other person is wondering.
So I crack a smile or I might giggle softly to what I think is going through the other persons mind.
Alot of people probably think Im retarded or something.

I take control over the situation and talk about something we all or the two have in common and stuff. If need be I will rap it up and say good by:)

I ask one of the other persons a question about themselves to break the silence.

I do something compleatly moronic till the silence is broken. One person is sad, one is happy, and I am over there trying to lick my nose.

I usually just say, "well isn't this interesting" and laugh. That usually breaks the tension and moves the conversation along.
