Laser disks look like giant sized DVDs (11.8" diameter) and had a similar function to current video DVDs. They predated DVDs by more than a decade. The technology available in the 1970s required the larger disk size and players that were much more expensive than current DVD players.

Laser disk had to compete against VCRs for market share, it lost. By the 1990s when DVDs were developed, improvements in technology made smaller disks and cheaper players possible.

a long time ago there was a war going on over the future of media very similar to todays Blu-Ray DVD vs HD DVD they however lost that war and dvd triumphed over all much like cd did over cassette. if you research a bit more looking at company's like sony and panasonic you can see certain ones backed certain techs and over time consumer judged who won and thus certain techs died.

Laserdisk is sort of like DVD, but it's a lot bigger. If you know what a record (vinyl) is, then a laserdisk is about that size.
