It does take both a male and female and also, it's not a really simple matter to breed bettas. You can't just drop a male and female in a tank together and expect to have anything other than a dead female betta. Try looking for breeding information on bettas and reading up about it before you even buy a female to go with him.

Is Sammy a female? Do you have a male and a female? It takes a lot more than throwing together a male and female to get them to spawn. In fact, not knowing what you're doing could cost one or even both of them their lives, so please be careful. They're very aggressive with each other. It mostly takes being prepared BEFORE you start.

Ask yourself why you want to breed them first. It's a lot of work, and that's when you manage to get it right. Getting the fry to survive is hard and often takes many tries before you find a technique that works for you in your situation. You'll see if you search for how-to's online that everyone seems to do it a little differently. But reading the different methods will give you good guidelines.

Unless you are seriously interested in learning how to make it work and are committed to doing your best by the fish, please just enjoy their beauty. Otherwise, it will just be frustration for you and worse for your fish.

Um, boys don't make eggs.

Girls do

Boys do make bubble nests, sometimes. Some don't, it's no big deal.

Cheers.
