It isn't a degree LIKE a "doctor's degree" -- it IS a "doctor's degree."
The PhD is the highest academic degree that you can get (higher than MD or DDS). It is a research degree. At most schools, a PhD needs to do the following:
1. Take 2-4 years of classes beyond the Bachelor's degree
2. Take a written comprehensive exam after the second year
3. Take an oral "Preliminary exam" in the 3rd or 4th year
4. Write a dissertation that shows knowledge of the field and original research.
5. Defend the dissertation.
You can get a PhD in any academic field. Most college professors have a PhD

It is simply a degree, such as Bachelor's or Master's. If you get a PhD in something you're dedicated to that subject. Usually it takes 8-10 years to get one, but I could be wrong as I'm not in college. I think you're confusing a "doctor's degree" with a PhD, although you can get a PhD in anything.

A person who has a degree and has undertaken years of research and has published their work and been assessed, may be awarded a PhD and can use the title of Doctor. This is a specialist degree that is usually awarded for at least 3 years of supervised, but original research work. All research students starting Ph.D. research would expect to hold a good degree first. A person with a Ph.D. degree uses the title "Dr"

A Ph.D. stands for Doctor of Philosophy. It is what is commonly known as a doctorate - basically, a research degree. It is the highest degree there is - considered higher than an M.D. or any of the other doctorates. They are available in many (although not all, as someone here said) fields. I have one in business.
