Poplar (type of wood) - absorbes the most amount of water in both salt and fresh, (Freshwater: 94.4 grams, 89% Saltwater: 79.1, 66%).

Just a guess but I would say Sodium as a soluble.
Silica for absorption. Example, they have it in shoe boxes and pill bottles.
