is there any reason why you should use a short water pump versus a long water pump on a 396 big block?

I have a short water pump on my 396BB which means my altinator is on the drivers side. the problem with that is I also have powersteering and there is not enought room on the drivers side to have both. Do I need to get a long water pump so that the alt. will be on the pass. side? Is there another reason why they made the different water pumps or what.

Short pump was used on Corvettes because of radiator clearance problems---go with the alt on pass side setup.

BB has different clearance to the rad. summit has relocator kits for alternators, different mounting brackets.
