A combination of the right body features - hands with opposable thumbs, the ability to walk upright - and the capacity for logic and reasoning. This means we have both the ability to manipulate our environment and the ability to figure out how to manipulate our environment. While there are other animals with similarities in some areas, they are lacking in the others. For example, dolphins are extremely intelligent animals, but they lack the body parts to truly manipulate their environment.

I would also add that our ability to communicate through speech and the written word also plays a major factor. This gives us the ability to pass down knowledge and build on it.

Language. Every species communicates in some way, but we're the only one that uses verbal (and written) language...

And we make our own tools. Several species of apes use tools, but just twigs they pick up off the ground. Can't forget opposable thumbs. Allows us to pick stuff up with our hands, and walk while carrying it.

And, to a greater extent than any other species on Earth, we rely on our intelligence for defense, as we have no other natural defense mechanism.

Inability to procreate and produce viable offspring. with non-humans.

This is the definition of speciation, regardless of what species you're talking about. Donkeys and horses are separate species, because their offspring are sterile. Same with lions and tigers.

the ability to reason. In other words the ability to think stuff thru. Most animals just go with their guts and, like Nike said, just do it, but we humans have the ability to reason, thus make more intelligent decisions. For this reason, we are, for now, at the top of the food chain.

We worship; mourn our dead ( and ritually dispose of them); imagine, plan far ahead, and are adaptable to any changing need. We are literate, allowing us to record our past, transmit info to any era; we appreciate creativity of any sort and do so for no reason even. We will risk life and family to rescue another; will negotiate peace and forgive; care about ALL creatures to the point of exerting all effort in preserving them; are aware of ourselves and possess the only ability to destroy ourselves and all life.
