I have 3-5 days left before I have to declare what my "graduation project" is going to be, and I can't think of how exactly to go about doing it. I know I want to do something dealing with philosophy. We have to write an 8-10 page paper, which obviously won't be a problem with philosophy; however, We also have to have a physical product to go along with it. This must:

-be student generated and should be based on the research paper.
-provide tangible evidence that reflects the “academic learning stretch” experienced by the student.
-be oriented around the performance of a skill, the production of a product, or the study of a profession
-i must also spend at least 15 hours outside of school doing it.

If anyone has ideas for a philosophy related 'physical product' I would greatly appreciate it. Also if you know of any books that would help me out on the paper, product, or general pursuit of philosophical knowledge that would be fantastic

John Locke. You gotta' just love this guy. He's the perfect philosopher for you to showcase. His influence is quite tangible and will be easy to elucidate in your paper. Plus it's all positive influence! He's one of the few all-time good guys out there (except for a few sublime issues your teacher probably isn't even aware of):

Start with the wiki...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Locke

HERE'S YOUR PHYSICAL PRODUCT:
One of the hallmarks of Lockean philosophy (as you'll learn when you begin your research), is his idea of "Man in Nature."

The Lockean "nature" is a place of abundance of natural resources, which when combined with our efforts, creates something of our own to have, to lay claim to, to call our own "property."

The influence of this idea can be seen in many ways throughout the U.S. economic system and throughout U.S. history. The Homestead program, for one, is a great example of people going west, laying claim to land, and making that land their own by farming it.

Even a person working at a fast food joint for minimum wage is participating in this Lockean idea. This is because he is combining his efforts with an opportunity which exists in modern society (instead of nature) to create value for himself.

One of the all-time Americana images is this idea of a mountain man building himself a log cabin in the forest. He does this by clearing a spot, cuttting down trees, trimming logs...and ultimately stacking them together to create something to call his own. We generally accept that the cabin is his because of our Lockean influence.

In that sense you could build a small scale model of a cabin, but I would suggest that you go around your house looking for small branches and twigs to use so that you will be doing this project as closely as possible to the "Real thing."

Finally, to make the connection you'll have to emphasize the fact that the scale model of the cabin is YOURS because you built it, and, you'll have to emphasize that NO ONE would dispute that fact because we've all been Lockeanized. (Barring any extenuating circumstances, of course.)

Good Luck!
