The MHC or the major histocompatibility complex is a large family of genes involved in cell recognition. The MHC are cell surface proteins dedicated to identification of the cells they appear on. They are recognized by our immune system. Some MHC ID the 'self' antigens of our cells. They declare our cells to belong to us. Others in the family of MHC genes declare when a cell does not belong to ourself.
Cell to cell communication can be carried out by surface bound receptors on one cell binding to their surface bound ligand on another cell. Alternately the ligand can be secreted for long distance communication. Receptors and their ligands are as specific as a lock and its key.

Oh come on! you really have great question. let me tell you based what I have learned in my biology class at college.
If you talk about cell in general, I would answer that "Cell Junctions" enables cell to recognize each other.
>>Cell junctions are molecular structures where a cell sends or receives signals or materials, or recognize and glues itself to cells of the same type.
Short, but perfect match.
Good luck..such a good questioner! lol

If you're referring to immunology, then "cell surface antigens" is the answer you're looking for.
If you're referring to negotiating positional and functional information, then "junctions" is the answer you're looking for.
