I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 531s, which is a slim model. It's only about 4 inches wide. My old network card did not fit as it was too wide. What kind of network card should I get? I was thinking I could get a laptop network card since those are very small, but I don't know if that would be compatible with my desktop pc.. So any suggestions?

In general, desktops do not support the slots needed for laptop cards. Dell can sell you a "shortie" network card, or they can occasionally be found on the Internet. You might check out a USB network device, these days everything is available foir USB.
