I live in a place where the only thing you hear all day is the wind on the bay, the odd Subaru going by, and... CHICKENS!! Constantly crowing and screaming, they are driving me bonkers!
Nobody owns them, they just hang around in the hedges.
I am trying to get some work done here, some deep, intellectual writing.
If I ever see one of these chickens, I guarantee for nothing.
Am I being a bit edgy, or are those really some unnerving little buggers?
How do you feel?
Is it OK to go ballistic over this, or should I feel blessed?

OMG! Do you live in my neighborhood?! Yup, the roosters in my neighborhood crow at all times of the day! They don't know the difference between morning, noon or night! Yes, it's irritating! The trouble is in my neighborhood, people raise chickens.

I remember as a kid going down the street to watch the chicken fights. Yes, as inhumane as they were, we used to watch them. I wouldn't dream of doing that now.

In my city, they government actually set traps to catch the feral chickens. There was an over-population so they caught the chickens and donated them to chicken farms to feed the homeless.

Hang in there. You're not alone in this.

Best wishes!

The way you describe the situation, there are at least dozens of them making all sorts of chicken noises the whole day long, without any sort of pause. I'd go nuts!
Try playing loud techno music at the hedges they hang around in, most animals don't like that. If you do so every day at different times, they might choose other hedges further away from your place as a hangout and leave you in peace, at least until they forget that you might play loud music at them any time you want.
My parents did that to a -uuh, I don't know what they are called in English, in German it's "Marder"- that had taken up living in their attic. It stayed away for a whole year, and when it moved back in they reminded it with some more music. It moved out instantly and never came back. Maybe you're lucky too.

I left the city myself and now live in a village to do my writing here. There are chickens galore here, too, plus roosters. The roosters crow at about five in the morning, and the chickens start clucking whenever they have laid an egg. All this is noisy, but is part of the bargain when I opted for life in the village. Plus, cows moo, harvesters drive by ...

I think, all this is wonderful. These interruptions are friendly background noises. And every now and then a villager appears by the kitchen door to start a friendly conversation.

I love it, and I guess when you decided to find yourself a place outside the big cities you had good reasons, too. So why complain? I think you do it with a tongue in cheek, and just to pose a clever question, don't you?

It probably depends on your distraction level. Sometimes I can deeply concentrate on something, so I can ignore pretty much anything around me. Other times if I am not so much into whatever I am doing, it would bother me.
I had a roommate for a while that would sit on the front porch and read a book, but if she could hear the neighbors at all, she would be come distracted, and have to come inside.
I'm not fond of chickens, So hearing them would probably bother me, and I would probably let my dog loose to chase them away. Some other people I know actually own chickens so I imagine the noise doesn't bother them.

Well it could be jack hammers, or the loud raucus music that the kids play. Or it could be emergency vehicles with their sirens blasting all day. I personally love the sound of chickens. I don't know where you are living but if it is a poorer country no one owns the chickens until you harm one and then the owners are all over the place. Be happy!

It is what it is.... I suppose you can learn to seek comfort in it if you can incorporate the sound with the things you love about your surroundings.... positive association. However there are certain sounds that I have no idea why I have an aversion to them, like nails on a chalk board, or whistling. The sound of someone whistling is so creepy and grating to me and I have no idea why.... Can you feel blessed by the sound? I don't know , do you think that it is possible?

I don't mind chickens so much as long as they are not crowing when I'm trying to sleep.

I would be really bothered by that too because you have to have that personal and quiet time to yourself to center your mind and that doesn't help at all. Find a place where you can get away.
