Well, my friend likes The Cure, Muse, AFI, Coldplay, Bon Jovi, Evanescence, Green Day, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Nirvana, and loads more. Those were just some random ones I found off of her MySpace. I think you should try them out though.
There is also my all-time favorite band (and one of her favorites too), 30 Seconds to Mars. Great lyrics, if you were just to read them out loud like a poem, they are very amazing and deep. Lead singer isn't a hardcore emo psychopathic screamer on acid or whatever, so don't worry =) 30STM is a very funny and caring band, try them out!
