Recently my roommate and I have been waking up to find that the air conditioner won't turn on. And its because sometimes it blows (not sure if thats the right word) a fuse. All we have to do is push the breaker switch back to on and it would work. But today it happened and even though the breaker says its on, our apartment's fan won't turn on. When I switch on the A/C, the unit outside doesn't turn on but the fan unit in the apartment makes a noise for just a minute or so. I tried turning on the heat and the furnace kicks up but it never blows out the vents. Either way I can't even get the fan to blow so I don't think its the A/C unit. Any ideas? Its hot and its too late to call maintenance. Is there a reset button or something?

Its really hard to tell but sometimes the circuit breaker twits because there is something wrong in the unit where it is connected. It is why there is a circuit breaker so it will be the first one to get affected and avoid any fire that maybe cause by the fault electric wiring or appliances. There maybe already something wrong with your airconditioning unit and the circuit breaker is the first one affected, now the unit may have had a problem already, better look for the maintenance crew.

You'll have to call maintenance on this one. With regard to the furnace, when you turn the furnace on, the burner will come on and heat up the heat exchanger and the blower will not come on until it is warmed up enough to blow warm air instead of cold air.

Your AC system may have burned up, or there may be a problem with the relay that controls the compressor and fan outside.

Call maintenance in the morning and get it fixed.

good luck.

What happens when you flip the breaker anyway? It may just be over used and time for a new one. But if its overheated, or it just turned off you may need to wait up to an hour before you can use it again. Also, check what items are plugged into the same circuit, and try unplugging them all (not just turning them off), sometimes when there is a short, or an item is pulling too much power it trips. Good luck!

From your description of your problem seems like the furnace blower motor has fail to start possibly due to bad motor bearings . The noise that your hearing inside the furnace is the blower motor attempting to start but cutting out on internal temperature overload. If you feel the outer case of the motor it most likely be very hot . You will need to have that motor replaced.

Hope that it is not a short somewhere or that the AC unit is just dying. Try another load bearing device like a hair dryer and see if it kills the circuit after a while. If so, look into wiring and not the AC unit.
