How long should I wait before traveling out of state by car with my newborn? I am in the middle of moving and will wait if I need to, but plan to go ahead and leave after discharge if safe.

Well, it is all going to depend on how you feel. There is no way to know weather you will feel great, or you could have severe post pardom.

As a rule, I would tell a new mom to plan on spending at least 2 weeks doing nothing but laying in bed, or relaxing with your child (as in not worrying about getting dressed.) When your child is born it isn't like you walk out of the hospital being you and having a new pet.

You walk out a totally different person, and all the sudden you have this little thing that needs you every second. If you have someone to drive you , and help, then plan on leaving at least 2 weeks after your child is born. With Maya I didn't even leave the house for 4 days, and it was a real challenge when I did.

But by 3 weeks old I was back to work (I took her with me). And by 4 weeks we were flying to NY for fashion shows. Don't try to overdue it. The first couple of weeks are really difficult. But after that you start to adapt.

I hope you're not driving!

If you're taking a car trip, it's ok to travel with him. I hope you don't have far to go.

Just make sure you stop every 2 hours to nurse him. Babies need to nurse at least every 2-3 hours at first. That may mean that you only travel in 1-2 hour increments, I'm just warning you.

I had a friend who delivered 8 hours away from her family while on a trip to see a friend. Rather than fly back, her parents flew out and drove her. She stopped every two hours to feed the baby. She had to take the car trip out of necessity, not for a vacation. It sounds like you're in the same spot. For a newborn, driving is better than a plane ride (and all that recycled air.)

You can travel the day you bring him/her home if you want. If you nurse your baby, you will have to either pump and take extra in a bottle or stop every 2-3 hours for feeding. We traveled right after birth, my husbands job required it at the time. Babies sleep a lot in the first couple months so it won't be a big deal at all. Congrats. Good luck and God Bless.

You need to talk to your doctor and pediatrician first.

How far we talking here?

You REALLY need to seek medical advice before even thinking that you'll take a newborn on a long car trip.
