HP nc8000, locks up when doing the system check in dos/ basic mode... windows does not even open. AVG is the virus protection. Any easy options?

If you have the recovery discs for it, try doing a complete reformat. You will lose all your software, so try backing it up to add later.

Take it to the shop. Could be a disk problem, easy to find out.
