The motherboard replacement itself is easy, but everything else has to come out before you can get at it. Pain in the neck.

A good tech can install a new mother board in about 15-30 minutes. Just had one installed in a Dell Inspiron and then replaced a few weeks later and neither one took more than a half hour. It actually takes longer to open it up and get to the Motherboard.

Most manufacturers web sites have service manuals you can refer to if you want to do it yourself. For example, Dell's website has service manuals for just about any model they produced, complete with instructions & illustrations. Go to dell.com, click on all support options, manuals, service manuals. Enter your model number and click on the system board link. Most manufacturers should have something similar.
