Like loose baggy shorts and shirts that are much less revealing. The same with beach volleyball, I'm guessing the majority of viewers tune in for the softcore tease of it.

The outfits do keep some men interested, no doubt about that. But they're in the minority, really. I know a lot of people who are genuinely interested in the WTA game and its players.

For example, I'm a male (last I checked) and I like women's tennis because it's easier to watch. The men tend to pound the ball into submission -- which is exactly what they should do, but it means that the ball doesn't stay in play for long. With the women, more volleying happens and its easier to follow the strategies and responses -- in other words, to understand individual players' games.

I'm a woman, so I don't know if it is a question of fit women in revealing clothing that keeps people on the channel or if it is actual interest in tennis.

I would guess the tennis fan would be equally interested in watching women play whether they are dressed in traditional tennis clothing (such as Henin and surprisingly for the US Open, Venus Williams) or in some outlandish costume or cocktail dress.

With that said, I wonder if the shirts worn by Nadal and Moya are creating a little bit of a stir with bulging biceps visible on every play. Also, is it just me or are is the camera turning to these players when they get a fresh shirt on the changeover more often than they used to?

Is the choice of emphasis by the media promoting the softcore tease mentality?

It probably would drop. Tennis is one of the few sports out there where the women's side of things isn't absolutely dwarfed by the men's competition.

Women's tennis sells out stadiums just as surely as the men do in a lot of cases. What other sport is there where it's like that?

The short skirts on those amazing legs are a definite plus in my books, but I like to watch the game itself just as much. I agree with what another guy said in that women's tennis is easier to watch. Honestly, watching a match with a guy like Roger Federer I sometimes just get lost it's so unbelievably fast.

The short answer to your question is probably "a reasonable amount". The outfits and good looking girls on the tour help to draw viewers and attendees at the events, but at the same time I doubt the number of people without an interest in tennis at all who've been drawn in by that is pretty small.

The ratings for people watching the whole show VS. those flipping through, see it women's tennis, then look for some views of T & A? Tennis is tennis & fans of it are just that, tennis fans. Ratings do not really reflect people watching a show for 1 minute & the guys I know are not gonna watch a tennis match for more than 1 minute to see an outline of some underwear on a chick playing tennis when they can get the real deal by popping in a porno. Those are just guys I know which may mean I associate with dirtbags....

I got news for you womens tennis ratings are constantly dropping not because of some of the trashy outfits some of them wear but because of the trash that comes out of their mouths(williams)/ It might have been cute in the beginning but now its just regarded as bad sportsman like and is driving people away// the tennis asso didn't pay attention to this because they thought it was selling tickets, they couldn't have been more wrong//mens tennis will be around long after the women simply because they're gentlemen and not what they wear although they are starting to have style////

How much do you think mens tennis ratings/interest would drop if they wore the same outfits as women's players?

Like swan lake dress, red hot dress, that are really showing much skin.

May be 50%....a true tennis fan will watch irrespective of what
they wear. Probably, this explains why WNBA does not have
as many fans as tennis does.....
