Why not Float the boat onto the trailer with very SLIGHT bit of power, hook up the winch and snug it up,THEN hook the safty chain. If done correctly no jerking of truck/ trailer when bottoming of bow rest, nor damage to boat. But your question does deseve the answer as asked, I prefer a cable due to size of boat, with a 3/8 saftey chain.

First of all, what size boat do you have ?? 14 - 16 17 - 20
21 - 24 25 - 28. you get my point. The larger the boat, the more safety is required. I prefer using a cable. It will not rot like rope. Cable can break, but again it depends on the size cable you use and how much weight you are pulling up on the winch.

All depends on how big a boat you have, and how much damage you want to incur if the rope ever breaks. If you have a 14' or less boat, a rope will probably suffice, but if you are hauling a much bigger/heavier boat, you should probably consider a cable winch.

You can use either one. But, cable is better and safer when you are using a power winch. Rope will snap all at once. Cable usually gives you a warning before completely breaking. Good luck. Hand winching is dangerous if you don't know what you are doing.

Cables get prickly. and can break as ropes do. The best answer is a strap similar to a seat belt. It rolls nicely on the drum. They do get sun damage after 5 years or so. Cables and ropes can snap causing injury.

The stitching on flat nylon strap seem to dry rot quickly. Ropes have too much stretch.
Cable has the strongest connection to the hook.
Good luck

Neither. I use a strap on a pulley. It tucks away nicely when I winch the boat up at the dock.

Cable & winch, however, a safety chain along with the other is the smartest and safest route to go.
