You take the number of wins the league leader has and subtract it from the number of games the league plays plus one, then subtract the number of losses the team in second place has and that will give you the magic number. For example as of today, the Indians have 74 wins and the Tigers have 61 losses so the Indians Magic Number is
163-74-61 which would be 28. Any combination of wins by the Indians and losses Detroit totalling to 28 makes it impossible for Detroit to win the division title

The magic number can be calculated between any two teams; it is a countdown to when the one team eliminates the other from finishing ahead (it can also be calculated for the trailing team, but results in a bigger number). Typically no one bothers with a magic number except for the postseason berth finishes (first places and wildcard race).

Magic number == (length of schedule) - (wins of potential eliminating team) - (losses of potentially eliminated team) + 1

Length of schedule in MLB is currently 162. The "+1" term adds in the necessary edge for elimination; without it, the magic number counts down to securing a tie for position.

So, MN == 163 - wins(one team) - losses(other team).

AL East as of tonight (leaving out Toronto, which game is not complete yet)

Boston to eliminate NY: 163 - 80 - 59 == 24
NY to eliminate Boston :D : 163 - 73 - 52 == 38
Boston to eliminate Tampa Bay: 163 - 80 - 80 == 3

and so on.

The magic number reduces with every win by the one team and losses by the other team, so the Rays are likely out of the AL East race by the weekend.

Tick-tock, tick-tock....
