I am staying at downtown SF Marriott and would like to go brunch on Sunday, where is the best place to go?

1. Dottie's True Blue Cafe. You will wait in line in a grungy neighborhood... but it is so amazingly worth it you will do it again and again. Specials that change every weekend include things like lemon ginger blueberry pancakes, eggs with savory sweet potato tart, and the best homemade melt-in-your-mouth coffee cakes in town.

2. Walk down to Mijita in the Ferry Building. This is celebrity chef Traci de Jardin's salute to her Mexican grandmother's cuisine, and it is without a doubt the most creative, healthy and flavorful Mexican food in town. Her chilaquiles are memorable, but its also fun to try something different like albondigas soup, or a quesadilla Mijita, for breakfast. And don't forget the Mexican hot chocolate if its a foggy morning.

3. It's worth the walk to go down to Citizen Cake, near the Opera House and Symphony in Hayes Valley. A little pricier and a bit more nouvelle than the places listed above, but imagine what kind of brunch the best dessert bakers in town can come up with... and you'll be right. They make a dutch apple pancake that is memorable. Make a reservation fast, they fill up.

4. Another place you will wait in line for a worthwhile experience is Mama's on Washington Square in North Beach. Mile high pancakes loaded with fresh berries so beautiful it made the cover of Sunset magazine. Terrific benedicts, and the best classic monte christo sandwich in San Francisco.

5. Last but not least, if you can get a reservation, the best Sunday brunch in town is at Green's in Fort Mason. It's vegetarian, with foods all prepared from produce grown at the Green Gulch zen farming community in Marin, but the food is so amazingly good that even carnivores love it. If you enjoy diner-like experiences, I have a good greasy spoon for you near the Cliff House overlooking the Sutro Bath Ruins. After I posted the above, I was sitting here thinking of all the places I have been in SFO where would I really want to be having breakfast/brunch.

It is one-of-a-kind, authentic CA. The last time I was there I saw politicians, journalists, tourists and regular city types. I LOVE it there and have been going for many, many years.

Bon appetit.
