Increase his water intake. It sounds to me like teething. Avoid banana they can stop them up.
Soft massaging on the left side of the tummy in a downwards motion can help move things along a little quicker.
Give water instead of formula when he is eating solids, can help. Give the formula an hour later instead.
My son use to have a constipation problem because I had to add rice cereal to his formula, as he had reflux quite bad.
I wouldn't switch formula's if it has been alright till now. Could even be a transition time for his little tummy to solids.
Another thing you can try is fish oil as long as you or your partner aren't allergic to seafood.
Good luck, I have been threw constipation with a baby and its a very scary time.
There are also stool softeners in suppository form, that can get things moving. Maybe talk to your doctor about that.

we had this problem with my 6 & 1/2 month old the other day and I called the nurse...
She suggested giving more water or juice and feeding the Gerber stage 2 prunes with apples to the baby. You could also put a little petroleum jelly or Vaseline on your pinkie and apply pressure to the inside of the baby's rectum. I know it sounds gross, but it will help start a bowel movement.
Maybe see a different dr, if nothing else helps. I think your baby's doctor should be a little more concerned, especially since she is straining so much. Hope she gets better soon!!

I just went through 3 days of constipation with my 7 month old and I immediately hit the internet for many suggestions. The best answer I found was by a Dr. Sears & another Dr. (sorry I didn't save the article otherwise I would reference it below for you too) Here are his suggestions: give the baby the 4 P's: Pears, Prunes, Plums and Peaches. Skip the rice cereal altogether for a few days, banana's and applesauce as all of these are binding. Here is a section of the article that is the best of all...........I added one teaspoon of all natural Flax seed oil from the health food store to his 6 oz bottle in the morning and by the afternoon, problem solved. I would try all of the advice given in the article only and see if a combination of these brings results for your little one. Use the aloe vera on her anus to help her heal.
Here is a section of the article concerning Flax oil for all you readers so you get the benefit too. Never ever use Mineral oil for baby or yourself.....Read to find out why...you will be appauled! Same goes with PETROLEUM Jelly..............hint hint:
Flax oil is a favorite. A healthy alternative to mineral oil is flax oil, which not only has laxative properties, but is a valuable source of omega 3 fats as well. (Although you may hear that mineral oil is a good oil to relieve constipation, because it is a mixture of hydrocarbons dried from petroleum products, I have never been convinced of its safety. And, unlike flax oil, it certainly has no nutritional benefits.) Unlike mineral oil, which slides through the intestines, possibly taking vitamins with it, flax oil is a nutrient that facilitates absorption of the vitamins.
Dosage of flax oil:
Infants: one teaspoon a day
Toddlers: two teaspoons a day
Children and adults: one tablespoon a day
Best Regards to you Mommy, you and baby will get the help you need by reading more.....I would not hold your doctor too accountable as Doc's today are not naturally nor nutritionally trained (they are pharmacutically forced and taught in med school always to go the "scripts" solution) Let us all know what worked for your baby.

Well, in this kind of situation, If you feed your baby formula, ask her doctor about switching to a different brand. Some babies are less constipated on soy formula. Increase the amount of fluid your baby drinks to help keep her stools soft.
If your baby is passing such hard, dry stools that she tears the delicate skin near the opening of her anus (you may be able to see these tears, known as anal fissures, or a little blood), like u mentioned, you can apply some aloe vera lotion to the area to help it heal. Be sure to mention the tears to your baby's doctor.
I hope this might help...

Instead of prune juice, go w/ stage one prunes. She'll love the taste and they WILL do the trick. Give her 1/2 jar at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She'll regulate in not time at all. If she's really miserable, you could give her a few bites in between meals too.

make sure you aren't giving her any of the baby meats. basically just start all over again with the baby foods. just give her rice cereal, some applesauce, and her formula(or whatever you gave her in her bottle.) my daughter had a hard time too,i think it just takes time to adjust to the different food.
also(you may know this already) but when introducing a new food, only do one at a time, and do the new food for a week. this will help her body get used to it and also help you identify the food if she should be allergic to it.
good luck!! I know its painful to watch babies suffer!!! poor things! you can also try warm baths when you notice her trying to go... maybe this will relax her belly and her anal muscles so she can go.

For short term relief, I second the soap trick (as recommended by Ashley/Kimberley) - but you must use glycerin soap, not Ivory which is very irritating, and if the patient has anal fissures, it'll make them worse. The glycerin soap is relatively harmless and can generally be relied on to produce a "doodle"

Aww, I'm so sorry. My little girl used to have the same kind of problem. Ask your doctor about putting a little bit of mineral oil in her bottles. That really seemed to help my daughter. She had all kinds of digestive upsets. I hope your baby girl gets to feeling better.

I used the sliver of soap. It really works! You only need a very tiny amount but it does work. My son was like this for about six months and other than really hard medication (which I wanted to avoid), the soap worked perfectly and it didn't hurt him one bit.

skip the karo sryup and add one four ounce bottle of slightly warm water every couple hours to her diet-generally little babies need more water, not the sugar and the jury is out whether the sweetener helps the water "loosen" them up...
