I have an old deck that needs a handrail for the steps to be up to code in my area, how do I install a handrail?

Not an easy task..how many steps are there? Is it all in a flight? If the deck is timber, you should use timber handrail/balustrade to blend in. It is a bit tricky if you are not a carpenter. But you need two poles at the ends & an sloping timber rail between them to follow the slope of the steps. You can infill the handrail with sloping timbers to comply with the local code to prevent falling over. The height of the handrail also depend on the local code. Try not to damage the steps & timber support. I would invite a builder, carpenter or architect friend for dinner & ask them. It all depends on which country & locality that govern this safety feature. At worst built a sloping low wall & mount a hand on top or at the side.

Being a deck I assume it is wood. So I would dig a hole 2 feet deep at the bottom of the steps and put a 4x4 same at the top then masher from the back of the tread up the 4x4 32 inches hold a 2x4 from 4x4 to 4x4 on that line mark the 4x4 and cut . Nail a 2x4 even with the top of the4x4.Then masher down 12 inches and nail another 2x4 .Cap the 4x4 with a 1x6 from top to bottom you are done.

Since you didn't specify what kind fo deck or handrail, you are asking about, I'd suggest that you go to WWW.Thisoldhouse.com, and see what they suggest.
