They are illegal in California and yours would be confiscated if you live there.
Ferrets need good vet treatment (you'd have to find a vet knowledgeable about ferrets, which are considered by a lot of vets to be 'exotic'). You'd also need to put about $1,000 aside for medical bills in the next 3 to 5 years. Ferrets are prone to cancers and have two diseases that a LOT of them die from -- Adrenal disease (that operation costs $1,200) and Aleutian disease (less common, but it's more deadly).
Our 'pet' ferrets come from the fur trade, so they'd been bred for at least 30 years with only the thought of a good fur coat on them and not for long lives. European bred ferrets are from hunting stock and live 15 years or so on average. The ferrets here only live to about 6 or 8 years old.
Baby ferrets also BITE, which is very hard to stop in them if you have no experience with ferrets. An adult is a lot better, and many rescue groups are looking for good homes for the ones they foster. However, if you are in California, that isn't going to be an option. Your department of natural resources doesn't want ferrets in the state and they will confiscate and euthenize the ones they have reported to them.

They are illegal in California, first of all and I was planning on going to Nevada and buying one there; not a good idea. I asked the guy at PetCo and he said you could, but if you tried to get a license and a rabies certificate (proof that your ferret doesn't have rabies), they would most likely take your ferret away. If your lucky, they'll give you the license and certificate, but you'd have to pay a fine for having one anyways ($2,000 at most). The best way (and safest way) is to either: 1. move to a different state. 2. send a letter to the governor, saying that it's not right to illegalize ferrets (the illegalization was a mistake in the first place). Sucks that Californians (and Hawaiians) can't have ferrets; hopefully it'll change one day. :)

If you live in California, be responsible and DON'T get a pet ferret. If you get caught, the poor little guy is just going to get confiscated and sent to a shelter. Work on getting them legalized.
