Let Jamie be x years old.
(x - 2) = (1/2) (x + 9)
2x - 4 = x + 9
x = 13
Jamie is 13 years old.

Let J be Jamie's age. Then her age,

2 years ago x 2 = 9 years later

2 x (J - 2) = J + 9
2J - 4 = J + 9

J = 9 + 4 = 13 years

jamie's age now=x
jamie's age 2 yrs ago=1/2(x+9)
jamie's age 9 yrs from now=x+9

x-2=1/2(x+9)
x-2=1/2x+4.5
x-1/2x=4.5+2
1/2x=6.5
x=6.5(2)
x=13

to check:
jamie's age 2 years ago=x-2
=13-2
=11
jamie's age 9 yrs from now=x+9
=13+9
=22
jamie's age 2 yrs ago = 1/2 of jamie's age 9yrs from now
11=1/2 of 22

x is her current age

x - 2 is her age two years ago (which is half as old as she will be in nine years)

If she's twice as old as she is when she is x-2, then she'll be 2x-4 years old

x+9 is her another way of writing her age nine years from now.

since we can write it both as 2x-4 and x + 9, we can set them equal to one another

2x - 4 = x + 9

subtract x from both sides to get:

x - 4 = 9

Add 4 to both sides to get

x =13.

Check:

Two years ago, she was 11. When she's twice that age, she'll be 22.
Nine years from now, she'll be 22.

you're correct.

x+9 = 2 ( x-2)
x+9 = 2x - 4
x + 13 = 2x
13 = x

Let her present age be x,
x - 2 = (x + 9)/2
2x - 4 = x + 9
x = 13

you're right.
