I am in high school and my teacher has given the entire class a chapter to copy out of our textbooks for the second time in the last week. I hate this so much. :( Last time my hand hurt so bad I thought it was going to fall off by the end. It seemed like I was wriitng forever because these biology chapters are sooo long. And this time our teacher said she would grade it as an assignment and neatness counts. I told my mom about it and she said I have to do it because the teacher assinged it. People who have done this have any advice for me on how to write so much without my hand falling off? Or even anyone else who writes alot. I have been writing for the past 3 hours since school got out and my hand aches typing this. Please please any advice.

Okay I forgot to add that this is more like an indirect punishment. She never said it was a punishment because I guess that would be against the rules, but she usually only gives out a lot of writing like this if we do something wrong in class. So I dont think there's anyway out of this besides doing the writing. It cannot be typed which really sucks. I have written 15 pages back and front so far and my wiritng is starting to get messy. Right now I dont care as long as i get all the wriitn gdone. And I wish i can write with both hands but its too hard to learn in one day. Any other adivce?

You should definitely talk to another teacher about this. This is, in my opinion, a pointless waste of time. This isn't a handwriting class. I have a college degree and have never heard of anything like this, except as a punishment. Tell the other teacher that you aren't learning anything, because you are focused on your cramped hand the whole time. Hopefully that teacher will advise you on who to talk to about your situation.

In the meantime, take frequent breaks for your hands. If you can't write anymore, then don't. Turn in your incomplete writing, and see a counselor about switching to a different class.

Are you kidding me? You have to copy the chapter? That's insane.

I understand that your teacher wants you to read through the text and deal with the information, but that would be better done by having you outline the chapter. My parents are teachers, I grew up around teachers, and I currently teach high school classes at our co op...and I've got to say I've never seen a teacher assign this.

Will your teacher allow you to type it out and hand it in? Or is s/he someone that you can ask what the purpose of the assignment is? Or if it's possible to modify the assignment - like to have you outline the chapter and write a summary of the sections? This would show that you actually understand, rather than that you can copywork for hours on end.

I would think that you'd actually have problems dealing with the info after spending several hours mindlessly copying it down. That's absolutely insane... Quite frankly, if my son got assigned something like that, I'd be calling the teacher, and the administration, to get it stopped.

There really is no way to keep your hand from hurting - the muscles in your hand aren't meant to do that much repetitive work....which would be why so many office workers end up with carpal tunnel. (Yet another reason that your teacher shouldn't assign such an absurd thing.)

Oy...no real advice, except to have your parents work on getting the teacher to change the assignment. Academically and physically, that's just no good.

There should be other science teachers in the building. You can either ask them, email them or get your parents to email them asking if this type of behavior is normal.
Copying pages down word-for-word is one of the dumbest ways to learn, in my opinion, if that is the intent of your teacher. It sounds a great deal like punishment to me.
Also, a local newspaper that's lacking stories may be interested in this type of work. I'm pretty sure that copying entire chapters out of biology books went out of fashion a few decades ago.

Learn to write with both hands and switch between writing hands.

Isn't copy directly from a textbook illegal? I believe what your teacher is having you do is called plagiarism!
