I used to have a bunny that had fleas and so i bought a flea collar (for cat and dogs) and it was loose and was not hurting the rabbit at all. Then one day the rabbit tried to take it of so he put his hand and pulled the collar and broke his neck, and the poor bunny had to be humanly uthenized (put to sleep) now i want to buy another rabbit but i dont know what to do with the fleas prblem. i have a cousin that cut a part of the collar and put around one of his bunnies legs, is that affective??

Flea collars will be toxic to bunnies. We recommend Advantage for bunnies--it is off label usage, but safe. A half of a small cat dose is recommended. Do not use Frontline on rabbits. This article will tell you why:

I had my rabbit for five and a half years before she went missing a few months ago and in all that time she didn't ever have fleas. She also never had a flea treatment either. Where are these fleas coming from? Do you have any other animals around? Maybe try to find where these fleas are coming from and kill them from there. Otherwise you need to use products especially for rabbits. i also have a cat and the reason i don't put a collar on her is because I think it is dangerous and uncomfortable for them. My husband told me about a dog that tried to jump over a fence and his collar got stuck on one of the posts. When the owners got home they found the dog hanging from its collar. The poor dog died like that.

I wouldn't use a dog/cat flea collar on a rabbit---it can be too strong. You can use kitten ( *kitten* ) flea powder, along with a flea comb. The easiest way to keep fleas off of a rabbit is to not expose him to environments where there are fleas---don't let him run around on the grass, make sure other pets don't have fleas, and treat your house for fleas before you get another rabbit. Also, if they are outdoor rabbits, make sure they are kept in a hutch off the ground. DO NOT use Frontline, or any of the other flea products made to be put on the skin---rabbits cannot tolerate these products.

A flea powder safe for kittens under 8 weeks old, which doesn't contain pyrthrins (highly toxic, causes cancer, neuroluical problems & even death) and is mainly based on carbaryl is extremely affective. Remember when applying the powder, try to avoid you and the rabbit from breathing the dust. FRONTLINE IS OFF LIMITS!!! There has been numerous cases of rabbit death from using Frontline. Hope this helps.

No. Flea collars can be toxic to rabbits, and the rabbit may injure itself trying to get it off like yours did.

Instead, you can pick up a flea/mite treatment (marketed towards rabbits, NOT towards dogs or cats) at the pet store (or call up your vet and ask what they recommend).

No no flea collar on a rabbit. They make flea spray for rabbits. Or you can talk to the vet about using frontline.
