Love & Rockets - Sweet F.A. - notice the char-broiled guitar on the cover. The band had the misfortune of having their studio burn down the recording of this album. 1996 was a deep year for good music, but this album was criminally overlooked.

Jawbox - Jawbox - Again, they chose the wrong year to release this effort, 1996.

Quicksand - Slip - their material has held up amazingly well. Check out the track Dine Alone.

Band of Susans - Love Agenda - the greatest band no one ever heard of. Words alone cannot describe this amazing No-Wave outfit. They were always in the shadow of Sonic Youth.

I don't think Kid A was underrated by the critics. They liked it for the most part, just not as much as The Bends or OK Computer. Commercially, it didn't sell like their past efforts.

That Petrol Emotion - Babble (Nice continuation of The Undertones)

The Psychedelic Furs - Forever Now (They a better than the Pretty in Pink moniker)

The Church - Heyday (Starfish really buried the album and it is their finest work IMHO)

The Chameleons - Strange Times (Really became a second tier band in the face of The Smiths and Echo, shame their were never really loved outside of England)

Aztec Camera - High Land, Hard Rain (were not afraid of true style and pop music when everyone was so serious and being eclectic)

Comsat Angels - Waiting for a Miracle (A lost band among many, but quite good)

Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden (Thankfully never compromised their song craft and therefore sold very little)

There are too many to list. Though one album that received some praise by a select few back in 1966, has sort of been forgotten over the last few decades, and that's The Mothers of Invention's 'Freak Out' album. Thought of by many as the first true rock and roll 'concept' album, as well as being one of the 1st ever double albums in rock.
The Beatles and George Martin were blown away, and at the same time they were hugely influenced by the innovative recording techniques used on 'Freak Out'.
Frank Zappa was a genius!
A true forgotten, underrated classic!

Wow, where does one start... Alice in Chains "Jar of Flies" does not get nearly the respect it deserves... and while we are on the subject Mad Season's "Above" is a great album few know of. Nelly McKay's "Get Away from Me " is brilliant. Cursive's "The Ugly Organ"....and everything MachPen said.

BTW - koodos on the "Exciter" pick.

OMG, I almost forgot the all time must underrated album of all time Jonathan Richman's band The Modern Lovers self titled release.
