The Ayers list of spelling words, you could either have the students read the list or spell the list. The list includes a guide for determining grade level. Another resource for comprehension is McCall-Harby. This is a collection of short paragraphs that you read aloud or the student reads and then have a short comprehension quiz.

I have a site about teaching phonics which might be helpful.

Well, quick and easy to use...the Brigance Reading Assessment. It will give you an estimate of their reading ability, but obviously not as thorough as a Woodcock-Johnson or other eval. Another good place to start is the Wilson Reading Assessment...that will show you weaknesses phonologically and give you a good idea of where to start with the kids. Good luck!

Insist on your school or district buy it for you ! I'm a resource too and you can print up little books for the kids to take home, there are phonics stories as well as non-phonics based and all aligned with many state standards.

The Briggance is a great tool or you can use Dolch Words. Dolch words, worksheets and flashcards are easily found on the web.

Show them pictures of everyday objects and write the object's name above or below the picture and have them repeat the words.
