Well we all I think, know about seti .
search for extra..blah blah.
but how do we know that they use the same method as us to communicate.
we use am,,,fm,,,digital...etc
I wonder sometimes if the seti team has got this right.
you know what if they are transmitting but in a different kinda format not like ours.
also I'd love to know what frequencies that the seti team are covering..
ok they say they are covering millions of channels but are they not stuck to certain wavelengths...?

note that you said reasonable wavelengths.
what if they are not using what we term reasonable.
just because we use these frequencies does not mean that they are.
Ok point taken about rf signal.
but I think there is too much traffic there ie in the form of background noise.
wonder if seti would consider removing all backgound signals such as hydrogen and all other forms of natural radiation.
also seti seems to be scanning star by star instead of galaxy by galaxy first
If they would take in a large portion of sky first they may yield better results.

If the aliens are as intelligent and capable as we are, they would have discovered radio, TV, cell phones, computers, MP3, etc.

The SETI Team is searching all reasonable wavelengths.

As far as format, etc., I don't think that Aliens have Channels 2 through 80 Television, or FM Music on 88 through 108 Mhz.
Most likely they have not agreed to change all Analog over to the HDTV Standards either. But, to find any kind of RF Emissions would be a real discovery in and of itself. Once some kind of emission is discovered, it can be analyzed for various kinds of modulation (Intelligent Data being impressed upon the RF signal for communications purposes). If the Data is ever split off from the RF Signal then some various forms of interpretation can begin to try and decipher what is being said or done.

The interesting thing that you muct realize is that I don't think Alien Birds or Alien Fish have radios and TV's. how would you go about determining if there are fish in the oceans of an Earthlike Planet many light years distant from us? How would you detect birds in flight many Light Years away? Certainly they don't have Walkie Talkie sets tucked under their wings...Do they?

Interesting question!

And it has implications for space explanation.

From the 1960s through the 1980s, astronomers like Carl Sagan imagined that if we listened enough for radio transmissions from the stars, we might tune in to alien broadcasters.

The problem with this thinking was, they assumed that alien life would be like earth life in the 1960s to the 1980s. It did not occur to them that aliens might, for example, use the internet rather than consuming all the energy required to broadcast into outer space.

So far, no alien broadcasters have been found. It remains to be seen whether alien spammers will find their way into our e-mail boxes.

Yes we do, but at wavelengths far smaller than the best of your puny Earth radios can receive.

That is so you do not know when we are coming to colonise your planet.

I know we said, "All of these worlds are yours, except Europa. Attempt no landing there."

But we're greedy.

I've tried sending a video to you on Earth but it just seems to contain 3 hours of static... weird that.

Radio waves are unbelievably slow over the distance of space.

Any truly advanced species would be using telepathy or a modification of it.

(personally I believe thought to move at the speed of light)

It is something that exists but yet we ourselves can hardly get to grips with it or even beleive it, yet.

Maybe in 200 years we will be beginning to comprehend this medium

Chryrstaline tones are a plot device occaissonally used in horror of horrors science fiction though outside of science fiction have no aknowledged viability. then light signals might be used like an adavanced morse code. light boxes relay light signals ah well who knows worth a thought.

I know that the illegal aliens like to use the radio waves. There are some that live in a trailer park quit some ways from my house and you can still hear them. LOUD and CLEAR
