if the filter is not mounted inside the return air grill ...then it is mounted in the return air duct just before the air handler or it may be mounted inside the air handler itself..it is possible it would have a cover on the unit that says filter on it ,with a thumbscrew you loosen and then just raise the cover and pull out filter,,,

Usually, if it is a central air conditioner, it will be in the ceiling of your hallway or another central location. If it is a wall mounted unit then the filter will be right in the unit. There should be a panel that you open to replace it.

It could be in one of several places. Go to www.hvac-for-beginners.com . Check out the page on air conditioner maintenace or furnace maintenance. Also check out the air filters page.

for a central unit it could be pretty much anywhere. It will be on the return side of the airflow though. It could be behind your return grill (in the ceiling, wall or floor). It may be inside the inside portion of your unit (pull the lower front cover off and see, make sure you turn it off first). It may be installed in the ductwork right against your unit. In some cases you may not have one. The previous owner may have removed it and never "remembered" to replace it.
