I have done the same thing! Kinda scary. What I discovered was that the stains are actually lime deposits and the bleaching turns them brown.
Use Lime-away and one of those green scrubby things. It will take some elbow-grease but that should take care of the problem.

Be sure to read the Lime-away bottle to ensure it is safe to use on your tub!

If you have a fiberglass tub you shouldn't use bleach on it. There is a product called Navel Jelly that you can use on that and it usually takes the stains out...however, the bleach may have set them in.

If the tub is porcelain I have no idea why it would stain unless the porcelain is worn and it is staining the underside of it.
Good luck.

You may like to try the following using Biodegradable & Environmentally Friendly chemicals:-

* Wash area with dish washing liquid, rinse with warm water

* Followed by vinegar (will dissolve iron stains), rinse with warm water.

The above will do a very good job without buying expensive chemicals.

WARNING:- Do Not mix vinegar or any other acids with bleach when cleaning!!

Don't use bleach on soap scum, useless. Bleach may be reacting with all above mentioned or iron in your water. Use a soap scum remover such as CLR bathroom cleaner or Lime Away. If the spots go you know it was iron......plus it's good on soap scum.
