When the stem "slips" off, that is when it comes off easily. Ripe catelopes have the ground color (not the net) is light yellow, not green. If it's bright yellow, it's over ripe....

Besides the stem turning brown and the color of the rind having a light yellow/tan color, when you press on the rind with your thumb (moderate pressure) it should not feel super hard but should just be starting to give. The ripe fruit should be starting to smell "melon-y" if you feel like getting your nose right down by it!

pluck it and if it doesnt echo its ripe!!!
