Because of the high education rate, high diversity, access to the arts, libraries, colleges, politics, etc etc. The rural areas have their fields and t.v. We in the city are the creators of culture and that's where liberalism and new ideas flourish. Not to mention the fact that it is also very competitive to live in a city. It automatically creates an environment of progress in political thought, the arts and philosophies, and innovation of technology and design because we are always trying to find new ways to make things, do things and create a better world for ourselves.
I find it funny that people think that the suburbs and rural areas of the country don't have crime. That's not true. There is alot of crime, poverty and drug abuse in the rural areas. Crystal meth is really a huge problem for rural areas as is crime.

Practically the first thing you learn growing up in a big city, is that there are no stereotypes. No one has a corner on laziness, or being a workaholic, or a drug abuser, or a wife abuser. That makes it tougher to scare people. It also puts a human face on the people who you are supposed to be scared of. I've known druggies blacks, and hard working brilliant blacks, so I can't believe 'they' all want a handout.
Neocons have a habit of lumping everyone but themselves into an unpatriotic bunch of people who seek entitlements instead of working. I've never met a homogeneous group that would fit that description. Maybe modern day liberalism is what happens when you know you can't pigeonhole people.

Yes, its the anonymity . They also seem to rely on others to things they don't want to .
They want free health care , but someone else needs to pay for it .
Higher taxes on everyone except for them .
Social services paid for by the large amounts of people excluding themselves .
If there is a large population , they can remain anonymous as they collect from others . Know one knows who is paying, and who is taking, or who the thieves are or who is being robbed .
The more liberal the city , the more unfordable housing and higher taxes , possibly because liberals are more emotional , and use less common sense . Liberal areas contain a larger percentage of first generation immigrants who don't understand economic housing concepts .

Well, I assume you mean that cities tend to vote Democratic. It has a social context, actually it could be argued that Republicans represent social conservatism and Democrats represent social liberalism (politically is a different story). People in rural settings are traditionally motivated more by christian values and family, while those in the city are more worldly because they are exposed to all sort of people.

Because in large cities you generally have a much more diverse cultural spectrum. I grew up in Philly and was raised a catholic, my first girlfriend was Jewish. I lived with a black girl for a couple of years and ate at a little hole in the wall take out joint with great Chinese food. That might have a little something to do with why.

In addition to the previous answer about demographics (many of whom do not vote), there are many more working class families in big cities who would lean toward voting Democratic as many of these workers are in unions or had fathers who were in unions. Most of these people are smart enough to understand that Reaganomics didn't work like he pitched it to be as "trickle down" didn't help middle class working families at all. As a result, most middle class taxpayers don't appreciate huge tax breaks for the crooks that cut jobs to pay for their huge bonuses. The middle class big city taxpayer also is smart enough not to fall for the crap that Democratic politicians are "baby killers" and "gay sympathizers" or the other accusations of being immoral. The middle class big city taxpayer also realizes that nobody responsible for 9/11/01 was in Iraq at the time and the only reason Al Qaida is there now is to kill our sons and daughters.
THAT is why...

My guess would be that in a setting where there are more people, there will be more diversity of people and lifestyles, thus (hopefully) more tolerance, understanding and appreciation of diversity.
That's not to say that all rural folk are necessarily conservative. I grew up in a town of 650 people (that's what the sign said, but I think they counted the cemetery headstones) and the general, overall tone was very pro-individual rights.

More education and understanding of the real world, as opposed to living in ignorant bliss on a distant farm with an eighth grade level education?

Cities lead to a sense of anonymity. This leads to a breakdown in the traditional values of charity and the traditional shame in being unemployed, etc. People look to the state to fill the void.
